Decompression Out and About

  • Author: Laura Gendron
  • 1 video (Approx. 12 minutes)
description
This mini-module explores common decompression tactics that are intended to lower heart rate and reduce stress in dogs — and how to tell when they are truly working. Participants will learn how rest (not sleep), licking, chewing, sniffing, and other self-soothing behaviors can support regulation when done calmly. The course highlights the difference between frantic or tension-filled activity and genuine decompression. Special attention is given to sniffing as a powerful regulatory tool, including research demonstrating measurable heart rate changes during scent work.

Through real-life examples, participants will also learn how to create safe decompression opportunities for nervous or reactive dogs, including creative “out-and-about” options and how to gently nudge — rather than shove — a dog outside their comfort zone.
