This 43-page journal details the Humane Society of Boulder Valley's groundbreaking, collaborative approach to utilizing psychopharmaceuticals in conjunction with behavior modification to support animals in a shelter setting. The contributing team members have been using psychopharmaceuticals with the shelter population for just under a decade. This Journal is intended to be used collaboratively between your medical and behavior teams. The goal of the journal is not to tell your organization how to use psychopharmaceuticals, but rather to share the structure HSBV has found useful in building our program. We hope this information saves you time, energy, and frustration and provides you with a map toward building your own programs and processes.

Dr. Lesli Groshong, DVM, Diplomate ABVP (Shelter Medicine)


Dr. Lesli Groshong is a native Coloradoan who joined HSBV in 1994 and manages the health of the animals in our shelter. To nurture the skills of future colleagues, she has mentored hundreds of veterinary students in shelter medicine and spay/neuter surgery. In 2015, the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association named her the Colorado Veterinarian of the Year. Dr. Groshong is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in shelter medicine and is a Fear Free Certified Professional. Her practice is limited to Shelter Medicine and Surgery. She pairs travel with veterinary medicine and adventures around the world to teach and perform spay/neuter. Lesli enjoys outdoor time with family skiing and horseback riding. Her animal family includes shelter fosters and adoptees, Morgan horses and two free-ranging peacocks.

Allison Hartlage, CBCC-KA, CTC, KPA-CTP, CNWI

Originally from Kentucky, Allison graduated from the University of Georgia and shortly after relocated to Oregon. She began volunteering with Oregon Humane Society and in 2008 attended the San Francisco SPCA Academy for Dog Trainers, where she received her certification as a Canine Trainer and Behavior Counselor (CTC), graduating with honors. She then returned to Portland and spent three years working with companion animals at a private daycare and training business before relocating to Boulder in 2011. Allison is passionate about force-free, science-based training and behavior modification and feels fortunate to live and work in such a supportive community. Allison is committed to the ongoing pursuit of learning opportunities. She is a Certified Nose Work Instructor, a graduate of the Karen Pryor Academy and Dr. Susan Friedman’s Living and Learning with Animals course and holds her CBCC-KA (Certified Behavior Consultant Canine). She shares her home with her two daughters, husband, and adopted Labrador mix, Gracie and their shelter kitty, Ladybug.
